Incoming Expence, aka "Spencer" was one of the lucky Thoroughbreds.
After
a knee injury ended his racing career, his owners took him home
to be their pet,
rather then sending him to the auction and making a little more
money off him.
After 20 years of owning him, they decided to move out of state
and couldn't
take Spencer along.
They contacted a Rescue and the proprietor, took him in
and found him what appeared to be the perfect home. Unfortunately,
the new
home was not at all what they had expected it to be.
Renita Prostman Campbell had a long going internet friendship
with the Rescue.
She told the Rescue she, too, ran an equine rescue. She even had
a website with
before and after pictures of horses she had "saved" and "adopted"
out. When
Renita offered to adopt Spencer, the rescue was elated. What more
could they ask
for this sweet boy?
After about a year of keeping Spencer, all the time claiming
he was doing quite
well in many email letters, Renita put out a call for help on a
group
email list for an underweight, aged horse she claimed to own. She
needed to get
rid of him and she wanted it done soon. To the rescues horror, the
horse turned
out to be Spencer. The rescue and friends, raced up to Renita's
to save this poor old man.
When they got there, the conditions shocked them. How could anyone
who
called themselves a rescue, allow these horrendous conditions? Many
of the
horses were underwieght and/or injured. They were standing in a
unkept
pasture with little hay. Against their better judgement, loaded
Spencer onto the trailer, took him home and prayed for the
best.
They evaluated Spencer's condition later on that night and
it didn't look good
for him. He was almost 500 lbs. underweight , unable to support
his own
weight and his internal organs were shutting down. He barely made
it through
the night. There was no choice for this poor guy. The heart
breaking decision to help him across
the rainbow bridge the next day was made.
Renita ended up facing criminal charges because of her neglect
of Spencer and
two other horses, Lady and Champ. Lady, sadly, should've never been
at
Renita's. She was more or less stolen from the owner. She died due
to an nasty
infection all through her body. It apparently started as a tiny
puncture wound,
but was allowed to fester. Champ was severly underweight, but, luckily,
survived and was sent to live with another rescue. Renita's fine
was minimal
and she never had any jail time, but she will be punished for her
abuse in the
end.
Hopefully, Renita will never do this to another animal again.
